Bamboo Fly Rods
I've been refurbishing Bamboo fly rods to fishable condition for a
few years now, not rest6oring, there's a difference. Restoring is
bringing a rod back to as original, that means original hardware, wrap
color and style. Since I'm more interested in fishing than working (and
believe me restoring is a lot of work). I just like to bring a classic
back to fishable conditions and well, fish it. Which after all is the
best part. For those of you who fish bamboo on a regular basis I don't need to
explain the huge difference between the feel of bamboo and graphite.
Graphite is a fantastic material it is light and strong and allows for
fast action and the ability to cast long distances. There are a lot of
great graphite rods, but they feel cold and characterless to me and
fishing has become less about catching fish for me and more about
meditation and recharging my spirit. Bamboo is slow and heavy (much like me) and the first time you cast bamboo ,it makes it's presence known. I read and hear about rods being an extension of your arm, well
bamboo brings the rod & fly line back to a separate entity. You
feel the rod flex, you feel the line load. Bamboo forces you to slow
down, bamboo makes you relearn the rhythm of flyfishing.
There is something about fishing bamboo, I don't know if it is the
warmth and glow of the rod, or the connection to the past, or if it is
just the forgiveness it allows. There is definitely something different
about bamboo.
